Vitra S.A.M. Bois Dining Table

Vitra S.A.M. Bois Dining Table

Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Jean Prouvé, 1941

A Dining Table Born from Wartime Ingenuity

In 1941–42, the Ateliers Jean Prouvé undertook a series of interior design commissions for the Solvay chemical company. The Table S.A.M. Bois — Salle à Manger Bois, or dining table in wood — was developed as part of this work. Its construction follows the same logic as the later EM Table: structural forces made visible through the interplay of legs and crossbar. Where the EM Table uses metal legs, the S.A.M. Bois uses solid wood throughout — a response to the scarcity of metal during World War II, and one that gives the table a warmth and refinement the metal version does not have.

Top and legs are matched in the same wood and finish. The tubular steel crossbar is powder-coated. Available in five lengths.
