The DKR — Wire Shell, Rod Base

The Wire Chair was designed the same year as the Eames Plastic Chair — a parallel investigation into the same problem. Where the Plastic Chair resolved the one-piece shell in moulded polypropylene, the Wire Chair arrived at the same organic form through bent and welded steel wire, giving the chair a graphic transparency that makes it appear almost weightless in a room.

The DKR (Dining Chair Rod Base) pairs the wire shell with a four-legged rod base, its surface finish matched to the shell — chrome-plated or powder-coated in white or basic dark. The powder-coated versions are suitable for outdoor use on a temporary or seasonal basis. Also available with a seat cushion (DKR-5) or two-piece seat and back pad (DKR-2 ‘Bikini’), in fabric or leather.
