Designed Around Light
In 1958, Poul Henningsen was commissioned to create a pendant for Langelinie Pavilion — a landmark modernist restaurant on the Copenhagen waterfront. He completed the PH Artichoke in three months, drawing on ideas he had first explored in the late 1920s with the PH Septima Glass Light. The result was a pendant of extraordinary precision: 72 laser-cut leaves arranged in 12 rows of six, each positioned to conceal the light source from every angle while distributing light both inward and outward. It remains at Langelinie Pavilion to this day.
The Design
The Artichoke produces 100% glare-free light — a consequence of its geometry rather than any diffuser or coating. Each leaf is matt-painted on the underside and glossy on top, creating a layered internal reflection that fills the fixture with a warm, even radiance. The pendant illuminates itself as much as the space around it, making it as striking unlit as it is when switched on.
Available in four sizes — D48cm, D60cm, D72cm, and D84cm. Brass, Copper, Stainless Steel, White, and Black are available across all sizes. Dusty Blue, Dusty Green, and Soft White are available in D48cm and D60cm only. The D60cm, D72cm, and D84cm are available with an integrated LED light source in addition to E27.
Please note: brass and copper finishes are untreated and will develop a natural patina over time.
