Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1925–26 — a geometric approach to lighting in which every surface angle is calculated to redirect and soften the output of the bulb, eliminating glare while preserving warmth. The PH 3/3 is a ‘whole’ sized pendant: its 285mm top shade corresponds with the middle and lower shades in a 3:2:1 ratio, producing a rounder, more compact form than the hybrid sizes. Designed to be hung high in a room, it integrates quietly into the space while casting a soft, even light downward.

The PH 3/3 is available in three shade configurations, each producing a distinct quality of light. The all-glass version uses three mouth-blown three-layer white opal shades — translucent and warm, casting a soft glow around the pendant as well as downward. The all-metal version uses soft-touch black painted aluminium shades with white-painted inner sides, producing a fine, primarily downward-directed light with no ambient glow. The metal and glass version combines a black metal top shade with opal glass middle and lower shades, delivering both qualities simultaneously. A frosted glass bottom diffuser is included with all three variants to ensure a diffuse light distribution.
