Designed for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona, the Barcelona Chair is one of the most recognised objects of the last century. Mies van der Rohe's approach was architectural rather than sculptural — the crisscross chrome frame, the hand-welted leather cushions, the belting straps: every element resolved with the same precision he brought to the buildings he designed around them. The canted seat holds the sitter in a relaxed yet supported position, and the chair reads as well empty as it does occupied.

Specifications

• Dimensions: W75 × D77 × H77cm (seat height 43cm)
• Frame: chrome steel, hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish; or Onyx Ultra Matte. Upholstery straps attached with aluminium rivets; 17 belting support straps. On Onyx Ultra Matte, belt colour is always black; on chrome, belt colour is specified at order. For Venezia and black leather, straps are dyed to match the cushion; for all other leathers, exposed strap sections are covered in the same upholstery leather
• Upholstery: 40 individual panels hand-cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted with leather buttons, all sourced from a single cowhide. Variable density foam with polyester fiberfill. Seat and back connected with a removable pin and secured to the frame with belting leather straps with edges dyed to match
• Leather grades: Venezia Leather (special price), or grades W, X, Y, Z and N
