Architecture at Coffee Table Scale

Florence Knoll never considered herself a furniture designer. As head of the Knoll Planning Unit, she approached every interior as an architect would — with the room, the floor and the building as the primary concern. Furniture was designed when it was needed and nothing suitable existed. The coffee and end tables she designed in 1954 are a direct expression of that thinking: spare, geometric, and scaled-down translations of the modern architecture she had absorbed under Mies van der Rohe.

The chrome welded steel base is precise and unobtrusive. The top — available in polished plate glass or marble — sits cleanly above it. Five square sizes from 60cm to 140cm allow the table to anchor a seating group or serve as a side piece, depending on the configuration.
