A Colonial Classic, Rediscovered

Designed by Ole Wanscher in 1964 but manufactured in very small quantities, the Colonial Sofa was virtually unknown until Carl Hansen & Søn relaunched the entire Colonial Series in 2015. A trademark interpretation of classic shapes adapted to modern needs, the OW149-2 reflects Wanscher’s deep fascination with 18th-century English furniture design — its slender proportions and refined lattice construction giving it a presence that belies its lightness.

The sofa is a reimagination of Wanscher’s celebrated OW149 Colonial Lounge Chair from 1949, scaled up with double centre legs for structural integrity while retaining the same elegant restraint. The elements support one another through considered joinery rather than mass, making the design’s strength a product of structure rather than material weight.
