A Modern Classic with Historical Roots

Designed by Ole Wanscher in 1959, the OW149 Colonial Chair remains his most celebrated work — a piece that pays tribute to classic conservative forms while standing firmly in the modernist tradition. Wanscher’s preference for the slim and refined is evident throughout: the slender, slightly curved armrests rise to a characteristic point before turning downward, the roundwood legs taper with quiet precision, and the back legs curve gently outward for both stability and elegance.

Despite its slender dimensions, the Colonial Chair is exceptionally stable — its strength lying in carefully considered bracing. The seat and back cushions in foam and down offer a level of comfort that belies the chair’s restrained silhouette. Fifteen years after the chair’s debut, Wanscher completed the Colonial Series with the matching Colonial Sofa and Colonial Coffee Table.
